Ayasuluk Fortress
A castle above Selcuk
Ayasuluk Fortress, also called Selcuk Castle, crowns Ayasuluk Hill and overlooks the town and its historical surroundings. Its defensive walls and towers reflect centuries of changing settlement and political rule.
History
As the ancient Ephesus settlement shifted toward the hill, Ayasuluk became an important medieval center. The fortress was modified during Byzantine, Aydinid and Ottoman periods. Its location enabled defense of the settlement and surrounding routes.
Inside the fortress
The site includes defensive walls, towers, gateways, cisterns and remains of buildings associated with several periods. Archaeological and restoration work continues to shape what can be visited.
Views and landscape
The upper hill offers broad views toward Selcuk and the surrounding plain. Be prepared for sun exposure and uneven ground.
Location
The castle stands above the Basilica of St. John. The estimated distance from Ephesus Palace is about 2 kilometers, with an uphill walk of roughly 25 minutes.
