Izmir City Center
A city on the Aegean
Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and a major port, cultural center and gateway to western Anatolia. Its seafront neighborhoods, historic markets, regional cuisine and transport connections make it an attractive stop before or after Ephesus.
1. Clock Tower and Konak Square
The Izmir Clock Tower was erected in 1901 to mark the 25th year of Sultan Abdulhamid II's reign. The tower and nearby Konak Yali Mosque are among the city's best-known sights.
2. Archaeology and ethnography
Izmir has collections that illustrate the long history of Smyrna and western Anatolia. Exhibitions and museum locations can change, including those at Izmir Culture and Arts Factory, so check the current official visitor information.
3. Kemeralti Bazaar
The historic bazaar has narrow shopping streets, local food, handicrafts and traditional inns. Kizlaragasi Hani is a notable location for architecture and Turkish coffee.
4. Agora of Smyrna
Within the modern city, the Roman-era Agora preserves columns, galleries and other public structures. The site reveals how ancient Smyrna functioned as a commercial and civic center.
5. Kadifekale
Fortifications on Mount Pagos overlook Izmir Bay. The location is linked to the development of ancient Smyrna and offers panoramic scenery.
6. Kordon and Alsancak
A waterfront walk along Kordon is a favorite city experience. Alsancak has cafes, restaurants, historic buildings and lively streets, particularly pleasant around sunset.
7. Historic Elevator
The 1907 elevator connects streets at different heights and leads to a viewpoint above the bay. The nearby Dario Moreno Street has an attractive neighborhood atmosphere.
8. Eat local food
Taste boyoz, kumru, Izmir kofte, olive-oil vegetable dishes and lokma. Izmir food culture is rooted in seafood, seasonal produce and diverse Aegean influences.
9. Coastal excursions
Cesme, Alacati, Urla, Foca, Karaburun and Dikili are popular destinations in Izmir Province. Kusadasi, in neighboring Aydin Province, is another accessible coastal destination.
10. Visit Selcuk and Ephesus
Selcuk is roughly 80 kilometers south of Izmir center. Regional trains, roads and airport connections provide access to Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis, Sirince and other significant sites. Ephesus Palace offers a comfortable base for travelers whose main focus is Ephesus.
