Selcuk Town Center
A town with layers of history
Selcuk in Izmir Province is the gateway to Ephesus. Archaeological discoveries in the region extend back to prehistoric settlement, while surviving monuments show Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Aydinid and Ottoman heritage.
Ayasuluk Hill and changing settlements
As the ancient harbor of Ephesus silted up and conditions changed, settlement shifted toward Ayasuluk Hill. Today the hill is crowned by a fortress, with the Basilica of St. John below it.
1. Ayasuluk Fortress
The hilltop castle includes medieval defensive walls and towers reflecting Byzantine and later Turkish periods. Paths can be steep, and access may be restricted during conservation work.
2. Basilica of St. John
The Byzantine emperor Justinian I sponsored a large sixth-century church above the traditional burial place of St. John the Apostle. The monumental ruins include columns, walls and the remains of a sacred complex.
3. Ephesus Ancient City
Ephesus contains the Library of Celsus, Great Theatre, Curetes Street and Terrace Houses. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the principal reasons to visit Selcuk.
4. Sirince Village
A hillside village about 8 kilometers away, Sirince is known for historic houses, small shops, local food and countryside views.
5. House of the Virgin Mary
This shrine on Bulbul Mountain is traditionally associated with the final years of Mary. The precise historical connection is not conclusively established, but it remains a significant pilgrimage destination.
6. Seven Sleepers Cave
A hillside funerary and religious complex near Ephesus is associated with the Christian and Islamic story of the sleepers. Its archaeology and legend should be understood separately.
7. Temple of Artemis
This once-monumental sanctuary was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only limited remains, including a reconstructed column, can be seen today.
8. Ephesus Archaeological Museum
The museum in Selcuk displays statues, household objects and finds from archaeological excavations in the Ephesus region.
9. Isa Bey Mosque
Built in 1375, the mosque is an important example of Aydinid-era architecture. Its stone portal, courtyard and prayer hall reflect medieval Anatolian traditions.
Local life and accommodation
Selcuk offers traditional restaurants, markets, cafes and access to Pamucak Beach. Staying at Ephesus Palace makes it possible to visit the area over one or two relaxed days.
