Seven Sleepers Cave
A legend near Ephesus
The Cave of the Seven Sleepers is a religious and archaeological site on Panayir Mountain near Ephesus. It is connected to a legend preserved in Christian tradition and a related account in Islam.
Who were the sleepers?
In a common Christian version, young believers fled persecution during the reign of Emperor Decius in the third century AD. They hid in a cave, slept for centuries and awoke in a changed Roman Empire. The story became associated with faith and resurrection.
The Islamic account
Surah Al-Kahf describes faithful young people who took refuge in a cave. The Quran does not conclusively give their number as seven or identify Ephesus as the precise location. Various sites in Turkey and beyond have been linked to the account.
Archaeology of the site
Research near Ephesus revealed rock-cut tombs, burial chambers, church remains and other structures associated with the late Roman and Byzantine periods. These remains indicate funerary use and pilgrimage but do not prove the legend occurred there.
Where to find it
The traditional site is outside the main Ephesus visitor area, near the lower side of the archaeological landscape. Approximate distances are 3-5 kilometers from Selcuk center and around 2 kilometers from the Ephesus Lower Gate, depending on the route.
How to get there
From Selcuk, travel by car or taxi toward the Ephesus Lower Gate area and follow local directions for Yedi Uyuyanlar. Travelers arriving from Izmir or Kusadasi should reach Selcuk first. Public transport does not reliably stop at the cave entrance.
Walking and access
A walk from the Ephesus Lower Gate may be possible, but roads and paths can be uneven or restricted. Check access status and avoid hot midday conditions. This is a small archaeological stop rather than a fully developed visitor center.
Guided visits
The cave is not included in every standard Ephesus tour. Travelers wishing to visit should confirm the stop with their guide or organizer before booking.
Nearby accommodation
Ephesus Palace in Selcuk is within easy reach of Ephesus and the historic locations surrounding it.
