Ephesus Ancient City

The history of Ephesus

Early settlement in the Ephesus region goes back thousands of years. Ephesus developed into an important Ionian city, was reorganized under Lysimachus in the Hellenistic era and flourished under Roman rule. Its role in commerce and early Christianity gives the archaeological site exceptional importance.

What to see

The Library of Celsus, Great Theatre, Curetes Street, Temple of Hadrian and Terrace Houses are major highlights. The Temple of Artemis is part of the wider heritage area but is not inside the main Ephesus visitor route.

Driving from Izmir

Travel south toward Selcuk and follow the tourist signs for Efes Antik Kenti. Depending on your starting point and traffic, the journey from central Izmir may take about one hour.

Driving from Kusadasi

The route toward Selcuk and Ephesus generally takes about 20-30 minutes from central Kusadasi. Parking arrangements are available near the main visitor entrances and may carry fees.

From Selcuk

Ephesus lies around 3-4 kilometers from the town center. A taxi usually takes 5-10 minutes. Local minibuses may serve the lower entrance area; schedules and stops should be confirmed locally.

Train from Izmir

TCDD regional trains connect Izmir and Selcuk. IZBAN serves parts of the suburban rail network, but transfer requirements depend on the departure station and timetable. Continue from Selcuk by taxi or local minibus.

Upper Gate and Lower Gate

The Upper Gate, near the Magnesia Gate area, is generally a good place to begin a mostly downhill route. The Lower Gate lies toward the Great Theatre and Selcuk side. Visitors using two different gates should organize pickup or onward transport accordingly.

Guided tours

Tours from Izmir, Kusadasi and Selcuk may include Ephesus with the House of the Virgin Mary or Temple of Artemis. A licensed guide helps explain the historical context. Itineraries and entrance-ticket inclusions vary.

Plan your visit

Allow at least two to three hours, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Check up-to-date official hours, ticket requirements and any restoration closures. Ephesus Palace in Selcuk is a convenient starting point.
